"What is NAMI Scott County?"

As one of the 1,100 local community affiliates of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI Scott County’s mission is to become a local voice on mental illness -- dedicated to finding cures for all mental illnesses and to improve the quality of life of everyone who is affected by these diseases.

We are consumers (those who use mental health services), family members, professionals and friends who come together to provide education, support and advocacy in our Quad Cities community. All of NAMI Scott Counties programs are offered free of charge and are open to both Iowa and Illinois residents. We work to advance a new vision for mental health that will make a real difference in the lives of individuals, children and their families.

Our members have a commitment to promote the well-being of this population and ensure that mental health is one of our community’s, state’s and nation’s priorities. One of our major goals is to help our community understand the crisis in mental health today and how conditions can change to improve this critical situation. Many more individuals in our community could recover from even the most serious mental illnesses-- if they had access to needed treatment… support and services in the Quad Cities area.

Help the 72,000 adults and children in our community know that they aren’t alone. Reach the 25,000 citizens in our community with severe brain disorders so they can recover their lives. As a small group, NAMI Scott County has accomplished much. But, as a small group, this challenge is overwhelming.

You can be part of these efforts. In the United States, just the economic cost of untreated mental illness is more than 100 billion dollars annually. It’s time to act together – together we can achieve what seems impossible. The impact and prevalence of mental illnesses cannot be ignored. Compared with all other diseases-- including cancer and heart disease -- mental illness ranks first in causing disability in the United States, Canada and Western Europe.

Meaningful change can only come about by partnering with Quad-Citians from education, business, organizations, healthcare providers and law enforcement agencies. Only collectively can we fulfill the promise of recovery and launch a commitment to a future where full recovery is the norm and when mental illness can be prevented or cured. Join us to offer this hope for the future.
