"Learning is a result of listening, which in turn leads to even better listening and attentiveness to the other person. In other words, to learn from the child, we must have empathy, and empathy grows as we learn."  ~  Alice Miller

NAMI awarded Dr. Patrick D. McGorry of Australia with the 2013 Scientific Research Award for his work on early psychosis, early intervention and youth mental health. The results of his work has led to the creation and evaluation of holistic and recovery-oriented models of care for young people and their families.

During the evening, NAMI also presented awards to several members of Congress--Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), Sen Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) and Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Penn.)--whose advocacy and leadership have made a major impact on the lives of people with mental illness.

Also speaking at the event, president of the National Association of Broadcasters and former Senator, Gordon Smith, and Jutta and George Kohn.
